What Romelu Lukaku's move to Manchester United means for Wayne Rooney as sensational Everton return edges closer

Romelu Lukaku imminent £75million switch to Manchester United from Everton has accelerated Wayne Rooney's exit from Old Trafford.

Rooney was always going to leave United this summer after 13 years, with Lukaku's impending arrival seeing the 31-year-old England skipper going the other way.

United insist the two deals are independent of each other, but it is clear they were given a clear path to sign Lukaku - at the expense of Chelsea - in exchange for the return of Rooney to Goodison Park .

Although a loan deal for Rooney - who was pictured near his home in Cheshire on Wednesday night - was one option being explored by both clubs, it is understood United have waived any transfer for their skipper in return for a clear run at Lukaku.

Real Madrid are reportedly considering the possibility of re-signing Achraf Hakimi just a year after selling him to Inter Milan. According to a report from Spanish publication  El Gol Digital , reigning La Liga champions Real Madrid are keen on bringing Achraf Hakimi back to the club from Serie A giants Inter Milan.
